How Centralization Affected Me.

I was a victim of two facility closures; in both situations the company centralized to larger centres. In the second closure, individuals were simply handed packages and told the place was closed. Some of these people had been employed for 35 years and never even received a thank you. This is a prime example of the scary reality that anyone can be looking for a job tomorrow. It's real: I lived it.

When the closures happened, I realized two interesting things. First, there was a need to inform companies regarding the value and importance of outplacement services. Companies need to maintain a good image, act responsibly, and treat employees with respect. Some businesses don't understand this.

I have always believed that employees are a company's biggest asset and that they contribute immensely to the company's success. The group of fine people that I worked with didn't get the respect they deserved, and they weren't assisted in making a career transition quickly and easily.

Secondly, I noticed through my many years of reviewing resumes and conducting interviews that job seekers need help expressing themselves honestly and in the best light possible. It is extremely difficult to be objective and say great things verbally or in writing about yourself.

After the closure, I did some "soul searching" and thought about life. I decided to do what would make me happy. It seemed that so many people accept a job because it's convenient at the time. I had plenty of opportunity to follow the norm - but didn't. I wanted to be happy.

Individuals want a career that is both emotionally and financially beneficial, but for many reasons they don't move forward. Is it loyalty to their present employer, or because they don't know how to proceed?

My question to these individuals is... what happens the day you are a victim of downsizing or termination? Does the company care? Maybe. Maybe not. From my own experience I strongly believe that it's important to be loyal to your employer, but twice as important to look after yourself and follow your dreams. You may not get a second chance.

I started my service locally by interviewing job seekers, developing resumes and cover letters, and by offering career coaching.
